Sīrah: Marriage to Lady Khadīja, Allah be pleased with her

When he, peace and blessings be upon him, returned to Makkah (from the trade journey to ash-Shām) Lady Khadīja was overjoyed with him after realising the profits she had amassed. She sent him a marriage proposal on her behalf. She was forty years old and of pure Qurayshī heritage as well as being wealthy. The Beloved, peace and blessings be upon him, took his uncles to the house of ‘Amr bin Asad, her uncle. He was betrothed to her by his uncle Abū Ţālib and she by her uncle ‘Amr.

Abū Ţālib spoke to the congregation on this day, saying:

“Praise be to Allah Who made us descendants of Ibrāhīm, Ismā’īl, Ma’dd and Muḑir. He made us protectors of His house and governors of the Sacred Land. He made it a popular destination for the rituals of Hajj and a peaceful land. He gave us leadership amongst the nations. Then; my nephew, Muhammad bin ‘Abdullah, cannot be matched in prestige, honour or nobility, even though he is not wealthy. For wealth is like a retreating shadow, a diminishing and borrowed commodity. By Allah! After this day he has only greatness and fortune before him. He has married into you through the fondness of your noble Khadīja for whom he has given a dowry…”

And upon this the marriage was complete.

Lady Khadīja had been married before this to Abū Hāla who had died. She had a child from him named Hāla, who is the stepson of the Chosen One, peace and blessings be upon him.
